Google Changes Entry Rules: Comparisons, Feeds, and Trust Instead of Simple Ranking

Google restructured commercial search in Europe, restored post views in Business Profiles, and ChatGPT Shopping sources over 60% of recommendations from product feeds. What this means for businesses in Russia and where to start.

Google launched a new type of search results in Europe where comparison services get a dedicated block, and sellers appear there only alongside them. Simultaneously, post views returned to Business Profiles — three and a half years after removal. Profound data shows ChatGPT Shopping takes more than 60% of recommendations from product feeds. Google's John Mueller warned that old low-quality pages can keep a site in distrust for years. And a British news site lost 98% visibility in news search after switching from .co.uk to .com and didn't recover in four months. These stories share one theme: what matters now is not “how to rank higher” but “how to get into the consideration set at all.”

For a small business owner in Russia and the CIS, this signals: entry points are shifting from classic SEO to structured data, feeds, and domain reputation. Ignoring these changes means losing customers before they even see your site.

New European Search Results: Comparisons First, Sellers Second

As Search Engine Journal reports, Google rolled out specialized blocks for commercial queries in European Economic Area countries. One block goes to aggregators and comparison services: it shows the best-ranked participant's offer expanded by default. The second block is for direct suppliers, but it appears only when an aggregator block already exists in the results. For an aggregator to participate, it must submit a feed or connect via API.

Documentation in Google Search Central was published September 8. A separate section describing seven regional specifics for Europe, Turkey, and South Africa also appeared. Important nuance: Search Console position data for these countries may now differ from the usual. A position drop may not mean site degradation but a search layout change.

For businesses outside Europe, this is a precedent. Google is testing a model where comparison services get priority access to buyers, while manufacturers or retailers are visible only as a supplement. If you sell through marketplaces or aggregators — your products are already there. If you work directly — be prepared for similar logic to arrive in other regions.

Post Views in Business Profile: What Google Restored and What's Missing

In September, Google began widely showing a view counter for posts in Business Profile. The counter is visible on each post's card in the management panel, covers the last 18 months as a rolling window, and sums views from Search and Maps. The previous metric was disabled February 20, 2023 without replacement.

According to the publication, these figures aren't yet in the API. What's shown are views — facts of a post appearing on screen — not clicks. The metric's value is limited: you learn a post was seen, but not whether it led to a call, order, or site visit.

Still, after three and a half years of “blindness,” this is a working tool for testing headlines, photos, and calls to action. You can compare formats: product photo vs. process photo, promotional post vs. news post, short text vs. long. The year-and-a-half horizon lets you see seasonality.

ChatGPT Shopping Picks Products from Feeds, Not the Index

Profound's July study recorded a sharp jump: the share of recommendations from connected feeds grew from 8.26% to 61.54%. The analysis covered 1.75 million query runs. Profound processes daily queries and tags products from stores — this isn't data on actual ChatGPT purchases, but a visibility estimate.

Within days, 450 of 687 Profound clients saw Shopping visibility drop by at least a third, while 67 saw it rise by the same margin. Most recommended products in the sample came from connected feeds. This is an alternative path into AI recommendations, bypassing traditional ranking. How exactly ChatGPT ranks products within received feeds isn't specified in the publication.

Takeaway for business: if you have a product catalog, a structured feed — Google Merchant Center, YML for Yandex, marketplace exports — becomes the entry ticket to AI assistants. Without a feed, you're not in the game, even if your site ranks well in regular search.

Old Placeholder Pages Can Block Site Recovery for Years

John Mueller responded to a site owner who automatically generated pages from combinations of domain names, technologies, and attributes. Mueller stated directly: Google's systems may have “lost faith that your site gives users something valuable.”

Cleaning such pages and demonstrating value are different tasks. Even after removing junk, trust recovery can take a long time, and there's no guarantee that reindexing a “clean” site will quickly restore positions.

This applies not only to doorway pages. Any programmatically created sections — catalogs without descriptions, tag pages with thin content, landing pages for every city with only the name swapped — accumulate negative signals. Deleting them is technically simple. Proving to Google that what remains is useful and unique is harder and takes longer.

Domain Migration: British Case — Minus 98% and Zero Recovery in Four Months

Per NewzDash, a British news site lost visibility in trending news queries after moving from .co.uk to .com: from 1–2% down to 0.02% in two weeks. Four months later, visibility hadn't returned. NewzDash founder John Shehata clarified the site had previously gone through major algorithm updates and had technical issues, so the migration isn't proven as the sole cause. The site name isn't disclosed.

Key point: a migration is hard to roll back once visibility is gone. Planning a domain change, you must budget months for recovery, not weeks as with a typical position drop.

For small business, the lesson is simple: domain change isn't a technical formality but a risk of long-term traffic loss. If migration is unavoidable — prepare page-by-page 301 redirects, update all controllable external links, submit address change in webmaster panels, audit content, and reserve at least six months for instability.

What This Means for Small Business in Russia and CIS: Concrete Steps

None of these news items directly concerns Runet. But all show the vector: entry into search results and AI answers is governed by structured data, domain reputation, and index quality. Here's what to do this week.

1. Prepare and Verify Product Feeds

If you sell physical goods — compile a complete feed per Yandex Market (YML) and Google Merchant Center requirements. Mandatory fields: unique ID, title, description, price, currency, product URL, image URL, category, availability, brand. Validate the feed in both systems' validators. Feed errors are a common cause of invisibility in both comparisons and AI recommendations.

2. Enable Business Profile Posts and Start Measuring

Go to your Google Business Profile and Yandex Business. Publish at least two posts this week: one promotional (discount, new item), one expert (tip, case study, process photo). After 7–10 days, compare views and repeat formats that yield more impressions.

3. Audit Your Site's “Programmatic Tail”

Export all indexed URLs from Search Console and Yandex Webmaster. Find thin-content pages: automatic catalogs, tags, archives, city duplicates, sorting parameters. For each, decide: add unique content, noindex, merge with parent page, or delete with redirect. Priority — pages that haven't brought a single visit in years.

4. Freeze Domain Changes Without Business Necessity

If planning a domain move — rebrand, zone change, site merger — assess risk per the British scenario. Prepare a plan: one-to-one redirect map, update all controllable external links, address change request in webmaster panels, keep old domain and hosting for at least a year. If no critical reason — don't change the domain.

5. Set Up Visibility Tracking on Marketplaces and in Comparisons

In Russia, main entry points are Yandex Market, Ozon, and Wildberries. Check if your products are there, whether prices and stock are current, whether cards are correct. Set up weekly position monitoring for key queries within these platforms. This now matters more than fifth or eighth place in organic results for a high-volume query.

6. Document Expertise for AI Systems

AI assistants pull data from open sources. Publish structured materials on your site: “How to choose…”, “Model comparison”, “Common buying mistakes”. Mark them up with Schema.org: Product, Review, FAQ, HowTo. This increases chances of appearing in assistant answers that seek verified sources.

Bottom Line

The control point has shifted from “top position” to “presence in the data source.” European search prioritizes aggregators with feeds. ChatGPT Shopping takes products from feeds. Business Profile finally shows post views. Old empty pages keep sites in distrust. Domain change can kill traffic for six months or more.

Priorities for small business in Russia and CIS for the coming month: valid feeds in all available comparisons and marketplaces, regular Business Profile posts with view measurement, index cleanup of programmatic junk, refusal to change domain without extreme necessity. Ranking remains important but works only for those already in the candidate set. Entry into that set is now governed by data, not just links and text.
